Tonight was the last episode of Queer As Folk and the end of one of the most amazing shows to ever air on television. I started watching this show during the end of season two and really began watching the show during season three. To turn on the television and be able to watch a show that dealt with gay life and gay people in a serious manner was amazing for me to see. I’ve known I was bisexual, or whatever you want to call me and to see that in public, out in the open is fucking amazing. Queer as Folk has changed hundreds of people’s lives, thousands of peoples views on gay men and gay women, gay culture and things in gay society that are happening everyday, AIDS, weddings, love…life.
Queer As Folk is my favorite television show of all time. The characters have touched me in ways that I never knew fictional characters have. I rooted for Justin to come out of his coma, I cheered for Emmett through all his boyfriends, I cried when the bomb went off at Babylon and I fucking jumped for joy at every Michael/Brian or Brian/Justin scene. I loved Emmett’s eternal optimism and spirit, I loved Brian’s bitchy ways and I loved Justin’s little fighting spirit. I loved when they went to the clubs and showed one aspect of gay life, drugs and AIDS and then I loved it when they focused on family issues, coming out and fighting for gay rights and marriage.
This show is going to go down in history as one of the most meaningful and powerful shows of our generation. One of the first shows to ever have gay characters with real emotions, real feelings and real layers like REAL gay people have. I urge anyone who has never seen this show to pick up the DVD’s or download an episode. This show has filled me with pride for being gay and I know it has helped other people feel accepted and loved and like they are normal good, real people who should be seen as part of our society. I want to thank Queer as Folk, the producers at CowLip, the actors and the writers and to all the fans who kept this show going for five amazing years. I know not everyone will agree with how the series ended, but I think it was perfect, because this show could do no wrong in my eyes.
FUCK tolerance, we want acceptance. Love is real no matter what gender, what race, whatever. Love is love.
So THANK YOU Queer As Folk for brining hope and smiles and joy and tears to me and so many of my friends. This may sound really corny to some of you but this show and gay rights are so fucking important to me. So this is a little thank you to a revolutionary series. I’m happy to still have The L Word around, it’s another fucking amazing show that I love and will continue to watch until it ends, but Queer as Folk will always be the beginning and my heart. Thank you Queer as Folk.
